Mississippi burning

Some weeks ago we saw the movie Mississippi burning in class. Later we got some writing tasks to the movie, we should choose one. The task I chose says: Imagine you are a teenager living in the South in the 1960s. Write a diary entry where you reflect on the situation.

Here is my answer to the task:

Dear Diary!                                                                                                            March 14, 1960

I am glad I started to write this diary. I finally found a friend I can talk to about everything.

Today Joanna and I left for Mississippi to eat at one of the restaurants there. We went in, passed all the white, well dressed people in the restaurant, before we got to our part, “tables for colored people”. We sat down at one table and wanted to order. One problem with being a Negro is that it always takes so long to order. When you finally get a waiter, the food takes a lot of time, but I’m starting to get used to it.

When Joanna and I had eaten, and spent two hours at the restaurant, we went out. There where a lot of people in the street. I asked one of my friends what was going on. She told me that two FBI agents had arrived Mississippi to investigate a case. I understood that it was the disappearing of the two youth. No, it was three, two white and one black. All the black people in Mississippi are just talking about the disappearing of two white.

Someone in the street began to wonder why the FBI agents came. The police in Mississippi came out and welcomed the two. I fast understood that the police and people not wanted the agents to investigate the case. They said that the case where solved, and that the three youth just had disappeared. But I knew that it wasn’t true. I knew that this would bring conflicts between the whites and Negros in Mississippi.

I will tell you more tomorrow.

A lot of kisses from your best friend, Julie!
